URBIES IN THE NEWS

  • The Kenneth Jackson Annual Book Award committee of the Urban History Association has selected Eric Schneider's book, Smack: Heroin and the American City, to receive the 2008 Kenneht Jackson Best Book Award. Congratulations, Eric, on this prestigious award.
  • Penn Urban Studies alumnus Paul Farber '05 helped plan a conference last January which focused on HBO's 'The Wire' and contemporary urban studies. A review of the conference, and the series, was published recently in the journal 'Places.' Read it here, included in the website for the issue: http://places.designobserver.com/toc.html?issue=717 .
  • Elaine Simon co-authored a chapter in the just-published "The People Shall Rule: ACORN, Community Organizing, and the Struggle for Economic Justice." Her article, written with Eva Gold, is entitled "Education as a Field for Community Organizing."
  • Domenic Vitiello's article, "Machine Building and City Building: Urban Planning and Industrial Restructuring in Philadelphia, 1894-1928," published in the Journal of Urban History in March 2008, has been selected as the winner of the Society for American City and Regional Planning History 's 2009 Catherine Bauer Wurster Prize for Best Article in American Planning History. Congratulatioins, Domenic!
  • Contratulations to URBS majors Phil Dawson '10, Brandon Savron '11, and Dave Dobkin '11, who have been named to the SEPTA Youth Advisory Council. They will provide feedback to SEPTA officials on the needs of our public transportation service's younger riders.
  • John Kromer, of the Fels Center for Government, and URBS instructor, has just released a new book entitled "Fixing Broken Cities."
  • URBS alumnus T. William Lester ('99) is joint author of an article in the current edition of the Journal of Urban Affairs. His article,  "Why Regions? Why Now? Who Cares?" is available online.
  • Two Urban Studies professors have published articles in the current edition of Dissent Magazine. Michael Katz's article explores the definition and shape of American cities in the 21st century. Eric Schneider discusses recent homicide rates in urban areas.
  • URBS junior Brandon Gollotti's article about the URBS spring 2009 UAB trip to New York City is available on the PlanPhilly site.
