Urban Education Minor

secondary education concentration

The Secondary Education Concentration is for students preparing to be secondary teachers of English, social studies, science, or math and students interested in the teaching and learning of adolescents.

For students graduating by December 2011, this program can lead to certification with an additional course, which includes full time student teaching, typically taken in a 9th semester. Students graduating after 2011 should contact NancyLee Bergey at the Graduate School of Education for information on new state regulations.

Required Coursework: 7 course units

1. URBS/EDUC202 – Education in Urban Society

(the following course lists are not exhasutive; other courses may be substituted but require prior approval from the Urban Education advisor)

2. Child or Adolescent Development course -
EDUC360- Human Development
EDUC522- Psychology of the African-American
EDUC560- Human Development
EDUC561- Adolescent Development
EDUC562- Personality and Social Development
EDUC574- Race/Ethnicity in Human Development

3. Pedagogy and Curriculum course*-
EDUC616- Teaching & Learning
EDUC 410/URBS 327- Research as Public Work
EDUC 671- Adult Literacy

4. Content Area course*-
Secondary teachers often need to teach content beyond the scope of a traditional single academic major. For instance, an English major might choose to take a course in Shakespeare or linguistics; a history major planning to teach social studies might choose a geography, sociology, economics, or anthropology courses, or a chemistry major might choose a course in another science such as geology or earth sciences.

5. EDUC 627 – Teaching in Middle and Secondary Schools
(if pursuing social studies, science, or math certification)

EDUC 629: Teaching English/Language/Literacy in Middle and Secondary Schools
(if pursuing English certification)

6. EDUC 657 Advanced Teaching Methods, subject-specific

7. Urban Education Minor Capstone – a problem-based or theory-based research project, typically taken in the final semester of coursework, that students can complete in the context of an ABCS course*, a senior thesis course, or an independent study.

(EDUC 555 – Supervised Student Teaching This course, requiring 5 days a week in the classroom, plus seminar, is typically taken in the ninth semester. It is required for certification)
