Urban Education Minorelementary education concentrationThe Elementary Education Concentration is for students preparing to be elementary or middle school teachers, and students interested in the teaching and learning of children and adolescents. For students graduating by December 2011, this program can lead to certification with an additional course, which includes full time student teaching, typically taken in a 9th semester. Students graduating after 2011 should contact NancyLee Bergey at the Graduate School of Education for information on new state regulations. Required Coursework: 7 course units1. URBS/EDUC202 – Education in Urban Society (the following course lists are not exhasutive; other courses may be substituted but require prior approval from the Urban Education advisor) 2. Child or Adolescent Development course 3. EDUC 414 – Children’s Literature 4. EDUC 421 – Science and Social Studies in Elementary and Middle Schools – includes fieldwork (Academically Based Community Service course) 5. EDUC 531 – Mathematics in the Elementary and Middle Schools – requires 90 minutes classroom placement weekly 6. EDUC 520 – Literacy in Elementary Schools – requires 90 minutes classroom placement weekly 7.
